Planning a Two-Week Trip to Thailand
Focus on three specific regions—Bangkok, the North, and the Islands—to avoid spending your entire trip in transit. Book your internal flights at least four weeks in advance to keep travel costs under $80 per flight.
- Divide your time into thirds. Allocate 3 days to Bangkok, 5 days to the North (Chiang Mai/Pai), and 6 days to the islands. This keeps your travel pace manageable.
- Book internal 'hub' flights. Use AirAsia or Bangkok Airways to fly from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, then Chiang Mai to either Phuket or Koh Samui. It saves 12+ hours of bus or train time.
- Choose one island group. Don't try to visit the Gulf and the Andaman coast in one trip. Pick either the Andaman side (Krabi/Phuket) for dramatic limestone cliffs or the Gulf side (Koh Tao/Koh Samui) for better diving and snorkeling.
- Pre-book your first two nights. Only book your first two nights in Bangkok before arriving. This allows you the flexibility to adjust your itinerary once you talk to locals and fellow travelers about weather or crowds.
- Do I need to carry cash?
- Yes. While hotels and malls take cards, street food stalls, markets, and local transport require Thai Baht (THB).
- Is it easy to find English speakers?
- In tourist hubs like Bangkok and Chiang Mai, English is widely understood. In rural areas, use a translation app.
- Can I drink the tap water?
- No. Stick to bottled water or filtered water stations found in most hotels.
