Planning a Tanzania Safari

Focus your trip on either the Northern Circuit for iconic wildlife or the Southern Circuit for solitude and walking safaris. Book your lodges and internal bush flights at least 8 months in advance to secure availability within the national parks.

  1. Choose your circuit. Select the Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) if it is your first time; choose the Southern Circuit (Selous/Nyerere, Ruaha) if you want a quieter, more remote experience.
  2. Select your travel dates. Go between June and October for the dry season when animals congregate around water holes, making them easier to spot. Avoid April and May, which are the height of the long rains.
  3. Book an operator. Hire a licensed Tanzanian tour operator to handle the 4x4 vehicle, professional guide, park permits, and accommodation bookings. Do not attempt to self-drive unless you are an experienced 4x4 off-road driver.
  4. Finalize your logistics. Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for the Northern Circuit or Dar es Salaam (DAR) for the South. Arrange for your operator to handle all 'meet and greet' and internal transfers.
Is it safe to drink the tap water?
No. Drink only bottled water provided by your lodge or tour operator.
Do I need to tip my guide?
Yes. It is customary to tip $20-$30 per day for your driver/guide, usually provided at the end of the safari.
