Planning a Week in St. Lucia
Focus your trip on the southwest coast near Soufrière to minimize travel time on winding roads. Dedicate your first three days to volcanic landmarks and nature, and the remaining four to relaxing on beaches and local exploration.
- Choose your home base. Stay in Soufrière for easy access to the Pitons, waterfalls, and hiking. Stay in Rodney Bay or Gros Islet if you prefer nightlife, sandy beaches, and proximity to restaurants.
- Arrange airport transport. Most international flights land at UVF (Vieux Fort). Pre-book a private transfer; the drive to Soufrière takes 45 minutes, while the drive to Rodney Bay takes 90 minutes. Do not rent a car unless you are comfortable with steep, narrow, left-hand-drive mountain roads.
- Prioritize your itinerary. Group activities geographically. Spend one full day in the Soufrière area for the volcano and mud baths, and one day for a catamaran cruise along the west coast.
- Should I rent a car?
- Only if you are a very confident driver. The roads are narrow, winding, and hilly, and driving is on the left.
- Is the water safe to drink?
- Yes, tap water is generally safe to drink in St. Lucia, but many tourists stick to bottled or filtered water out of habit.
