Plan Backpacking Southeast Asia

Plan 2-3 months minimum for a proper Southeast Asia backpacking trip, starting in Thailand for visa-free entry, then moving through Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and potentially Malaysia or Indonesia. Budget $30-50 per day and book only your first few nights — the rest you can arrange as you go.

  1. Choose your route direction. Most backpackers go north to south or south to north. Popular routes: Bangkok → Siem Reap → Ho Chi Minh City → Hoi An → Hanoi → Vientiane → Luang Prabang → Chiang Mai. Or reverse it. Avoid zigzagging — overland transport is slow and border crossings eat time.
  2. Book your entry and exit flights only. Fly into Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, or Ho Chi Minh City — these have the cheapest international connections. Book your departure flight from a different city 2-3 months later. Leave the middle flexible since plans always change on the road.
  3. Get visa requirements sorted. Thailand gives most nationalities 30 days visa-free. Vietnam requires an e-visa ($25). Cambodia does visa-on-arrival ($30). Laos does visa-on-arrival ($35-45). Malaysia gives 90 days visa-free. Get Vietnam's e-visa before you go — it's the only one you can't get at the border.
  4. Book accommodation for first 3-4 nights only. Book a hostel in your arrival city for your first few nights to beat jet lag and get oriented. After that, book as you go — accommodation is plentiful and cheap. Use Hostelworld or Agoda, or just walk in.
  5. Plan your transportation strategy. Buses are cheapest but slowest. Flights between countries cost $50-150 and save days of travel time. Popular overland routes: Bangkok to Siem Reap ($15, 8 hours), Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh City ($25, 12 hours), Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi ($30, 18 hours overnight). Book transport 1-2 days ahead.
  6. Set up your money situation. Get a no-fee ATM card like Charles Schwab or Capital One. Notify your banks you're traveling. Bring $200-300 USD cash as backup — USD is widely accepted. Most places take card now, but have cash for small guesthouses and street food.
How much time do I need minimum?
6 weeks absolute minimum for Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. 8-12 weeks is ideal for adding Laos and either Malaysia or Indonesia without feeling rushed.
Is it safe to travel alone?
Southeast Asia is very safe for solo backpackers. The backpacker trail is well-established with hostels, tours, and transport designed for independent travelers. You'll meet other backpackers constantly.
Should I book everything in advance?
No. Book your first few nights and your entry/exit flights. Everything else can be arranged 1-2 days ahead. Booking too far ahead kills flexibility when you want to stay longer somewhere or change plans.
What's the best route for first-timers?
Thailand → Cambodia → Vietnam is classic and easy. Start in Bangkok (visa-free), take a bus to Siem Reap for Angkor Wat, then continue overland to Ho Chi Minh City and work your way north through Vietnam.
