Planning a Garden Route Road Trip

A Garden Route road trip covers the 300km stretch between Mossel Bay and Storms River. Allocate at least 5 days to drive the route to ensure you can stop at key nature reserves without rushing through the coastal towns.

  1. Rent a car in Cape Town. Pick up your rental at Cape Town International Airport (CPT). Ensure your rental agreement allows for one-way drop-offs if you aren't returning to Cape Town, or plan for a round trip. Book an automatic transmission vehicle if you aren't comfortable driving on the left side of the road with a manual shifter.
  2. Map your overnight stops. The most efficient route stops in Hermanus (whale watching), Knysna (lagoon and forest access), and Nature’s Valley (hiking). Don't try to drive the entire route in one day; you will miss the scenery.
  3. Secure your park permits. If you plan on entering Tsitsikamma or Addo Elephant Park, book your entry passes online via SANParks in advance to avoid queues at the gates during peak season.
  4. Check seasonal weather. The Garden Route is temperate, but winters (June-August) are rainy. For the best outdoor experience, aim for the shoulder seasons: March to May or September to November.
Is it safe to drive the Garden Route?
Yes, it is generally safe. Stick to the N2 highway during daylight hours and avoid driving at night to minimize risks from wildlife crossing the road.
Do I need a 4x4 vehicle?
No. The main Garden Route is entirely paved and easily navigable with a standard sedan.
