Sightseeing Singapore in the Tropical Heat
Combat Singapore's 30°C+ heat and 80% humidity by scheduling outdoor activities for before 10:00 AM or after 5:00 PM. Utilize the city's extensive underground pedestrian network and air-conditioned malls to transit between major attractions during the midday sun.
- Master the Midday Shift. Do not attempt walking tours between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Use this time to explore the National Museum of Singapore, the ArtScience Museum, or the air-conditioned indoor forests of the Cloud Forest dome at Gardens by the Bay.
- Use the Underground Connector Network. Most of the Central Business District and Orchard Road are connected via underground walkways. Look for the 'Underpass' or 'City Link' signs to walk between MRT stations and malls without ever stepping into direct sunlight.
- Hydrate Like a Local. Singapore's tap water is perfectly safe to drink. Carry a 1-liter reusable bottle and refill it at fountains located near public restrooms or food courts to save the $2.50 SGD you would otherwise spend on bottled water.
- Time Your Gardens by the Bay Visit. Visit the outdoor Supertree Grove after 7:00 PM. It is significantly cooler, and you can catch the Garden Rhapsody light show which runs daily at 7:45 PM and 8:45 PM.
- Is it really too hot to walk?
- Yes. The humidity makes the 'feels like' temperature consistently exceed 35°C. Walking for more than 20 minutes at noon will lead to heat exhaustion.
- Do I need a jacket?
- Yes, carry a very light cardigan or windbreaker. Public transport, cinemas, and malls keep their air conditioning set to around 20°C, which feels freezing compared to the outside.
