Planning a Riviera Maya Itinerary
Focus your itinerary by picking one base town—Tulum for beach vibes or Playa del Carmen for convenience—and limit travel to one major activity per day to account for heat and transit. Dedicate 7 days to cover a balance of cenotes, ruins, and beach relaxation.
- Choose your base wisely. If you want nightlife and walkability, choose Playa del Carmen. If you prefer bohemian-style beach clubs and jungle retreats, choose Tulum. Avoid moving hotels mid-trip; traffic on Highway 307 can be slow.
- Prioritize one major site per day. Cenotes and ruins take longer than you think. Aim for one morning excursion (leaving by 8:00 AM to beat tour buses) and keep the afternoon free for the beach or pool.
- Book private transport or a rental car. Avoid 'colectivos' (shared vans) if you are traveling with more than one person or have luggage; the cost of a private driver for a day is usually $100–$150 and saves 3 hours of waiting time.
- Map your excursions by distance. Group activities in the north (Akumal, Puerto Morelos) together and those in the south (Cobá, Sian Ka'an) on separate days to minimize time spent on the single coastal highway.
- Do I need to rent a car?
- Only if you plan to visit remote cenotes daily. For a standard 7-day trip, private drivers or organized tours are less stressful due to erratic parking and road conditions.
- Is it safe to drink the tap water?
- No. Use bottled or filtered water for drinking and brushing your teeth. Ice in major hotels and restaurants is typically filtered.
