Planning a Family Trip to the Norwegian Fjords

Focus your trip on the Nærøyfjord and Geirangerfjord regions, using Bergen as your primary hub. Limit your travel to one region to avoid spending your entire holiday in the car or on ferries.

  1. Choose your base. Base yourself in Bergen for at least 3 days. It is the gateway to the fjords and offers the best infrastructure for families, including easy access to the Bergen Railway and fjord cruise terminals.
  2. Use public transport for the 'Norway in a Nutshell' route. Don't drive the whole way. Use the combined train, bus, and boat ticket known as 'Norway in a Nutshell' to see the best of the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord without managing car rentals or parking.
  3. Time your ferry crossings. If driving, use the 'Fjord1' or 'Norled' app to check ferry schedules in advance. Book electric ferry tickets online if available, as they often offer family discounts.
  4. Pack for 'four seasons in one day'. Even in July, temperatures can drop to 8°C (46°F) on the water. Dress children in wool base layers and bring waterproof shells, regardless of the forecast.
Is it too expensive for a family?
Yes, it is pricey. Save money by shopping at 'Rema 1000' or 'Coop' grocery stores for lunch supplies instead of eating in restaurants.
Can I do this with a stroller?
Bergen is hilly and cobblestoned, and many fjord hiking trails are not stroller-friendly. Bring a hiking carrier for toddlers if you plan to leave the city centers.
