Planning a Northern Thailand Road Trip Loop
Complete this loop by renting a car or motorcycle in Chiang Mai, heading northwest to Pai, looping through the mountains to Chiang Rai, and returning south. Allocate at least 10 days to cover the 700-kilometer route without rushing through the winding mountain roads.
- Secure your transport. Rent a reliable car or a minimum 150cc scooter in Chiang Mai. If taking a bike, ensure you have an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle endorsement to avoid heavy fines at police checkpoints.
- Navigate the Mae Hong Son Loop. Start by heading to Pai via the 762 curves of Route 1095. Continue toward Mae Hong Son before cutting east across the mountains toward Chiang Rai. Do not attempt this route at night due to poor lighting and wandering livestock.
- Fuel and cash stops. Fill your tank whenever you reach half-empty, especially on the stretches between Mae Hong Son and Fang. Carry at least 5,000 THB in cash, as mountain villages often lack ATMs.
- Check the air quality. Check the AQI (Air Quality Index) before booking between February and April. This is 'burning season' in the North, where crop fires make the air hazardous to breathe and obscure all mountain views.
- Is it safe to ride a scooter?
- Only if you are an experienced rider. The 762 curves into Pai are treacherous for beginners and require constant focus.
- Can I do this loop in 3 days?
- You can, but you will spend 80% of your trip sitting on a bike. I recommend at least 5 days to actually see the towns.
