How to execute a Nepal visa run from India
Cross the border by land at Sonauli or take a direct flight from Delhi to Kathmandu to reset your Indian tourist visa clock. You must remain outside of India for at least two months before re-entering if you are on a standard 180-day Indian tourist visa, though this rule is inconsistently enforced.
- Check your visa conditions. Verify if your Indian visa is 'multi-entry'. If it is not, you cannot re-enter India regardless of how long you stay in Nepal. Ensure you have not exceeded your 180-day annual limit.
- Choose your crossing method. For a land crossing, take a bus to the Sonauli border (near Gorakhpur). For a faster route, fly from Delhi (DEL) to Kathmandu (KTM), which takes 1.5 hours.
- Clear immigration. Exit India by getting your passport stamped at the border immigration office. Obtain your Nepal visa-on-arrival at the border or airport ($30 for 15 days).
- Stay the required duration. The Indian government technically requires a two-month gap between visits for tourist visa holders. Do not try to re-enter India the next day; spend at least 60 days in Nepal to be safe.
- Can I do a 'border bounce' and return to India the same day?
- Technically no. Indian immigration will likely flag a same-day return, and you risk being denied entry or interrogated.
- Is the Sonauli border crossing safe?
- It is busy and chaotic but generally safe. Avoid using unofficial 'fixers' who offer to speed up your process for a fee; do it yourself at the official windows.
