How to Trek to Everest Base Camp
The Everest Base Camp trek takes 12-14 days round trip from Lukla, covering 130km with a maximum altitude of 5,364m. Fly to Lukla from Kathmandu, then follow the classic route through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche to reach base camp.
- Get your permits in Kathmandu. Obtain a Sagarmatha National Park permit (3,000 NPR) and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit (2,000 NPR). Most trekking agencies handle this, or visit the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu yourself.
- Fly Kathmandu to Lukla. Book the 35-minute flight to Lukla airport (2,860m). Flights cost $180-220 and are weather dependent. Book through a trekking agency or directly with airlines like Tara Air or Summit Air. Morning flights have better weather odds.
- Trek Lukla to Namche Bazaar (Day 1-2). Day 1: Lukla to Phakding (2,610m), 3-4 hours. Day 2: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m), 6-7 hours including the steep climb after crossing the Hillary Suspension Bridge. Stay in Namche for acclimatization day.
- Acclimatize in Namche Bazaar (Day 3). Take a mandatory rest day. Hike to Everest View Hotel (3,880m) for mountain views and return to sleep in Namche. This helps your body adjust to altitude. Visit the Sherpa Cultural Museum if weather is poor.
- Trek to Tengboche (Day 4). Namche to Tengboche Monastery (3,860m), 5-6 hours. Gradual climb through rhododendron forests. Visit the monastery for evening prayers if you arrive before 6pm.
- Trek to Dingboche (Day 5-6). Day 5: Tengboche to Dingboche (4,410m), 5-6 hours. Day 6: Acclimatization day in Dingboche. Hike to Nangkartshang Peak (5,083m) viewpoint and return to sleep in Dingboche.
- Trek to Lobuche (Day 7). Dingboche to Lobuche (4,910m), 5-6 hours. Pass the memorials at Thukla Pass (4,830m) honoring climbers who died on Everest. The trail becomes more barren and rocky.
- Summit day to Everest Base Camp (Day 8). Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5,170m), 3 hours, then drop your pack and continue to Everest Base Camp (5,364m), 2 hours more. Return to sleep in Gorak Shep. Total walking time: 7-8 hours.
- Optional: Climb Kala Patthar (Day 9). Early morning hike from Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar summit (5,643m) for the best Everest views, 3-4 hours round trip. Start before sunrise for clear mountain views and return to Gorak Shep for breakfast.
- Descend to Lukla (Days 10-12). Day 10: Gorak Shep to Pheriche (4,280m). Day 11: Pheriche to Namche Bazaar. Day 12: Namche to Lukla. Descent is faster but tough on knees. Use trekking poles.
- Do I need a guide or can I trek independently?
- You can trek independently. The trail is well-marked and teahouses provide accommodation and meals. However, a guide helps with altitude sickness recognition, cultural insights, and emergency situations. Required for some trekkers depending on new regulations.
- What happens if I get altitude sickness?
- Descend immediately if symptoms worsen. Mild headache and nausea are normal above 3,000m. Serious symptoms include confusion, difficulty walking, or severe headache. Evacuation by helicopter costs $5,000-8,000 so get travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking.
- How physically fit do I need to be?
- You should comfortably hike 6-8 hours daily with a daypack for 2 weeks. Train with uphill hiking for 3-6 months before. It's more about endurance and mental stamina than peak fitness. Many people in average shape complete the trek successfully.
- What if flights to Lukla get cancelled?
- Weather delays are common. Build 2-3 buffer days into your schedule. Alternative is helicopters ($500+ each way) or driving to Jiri and walking 7 extra days. Most people wait it out - delays rarely exceed 3 days.
