How to Plan Your Acclimatization Days for Everest Base Camp
You must schedule two dedicated acclimatization days—one in Namche Bazaar (3,440m) and one in Dingboche (4,410m)—to safely adjust to the thinning air. Follow the 'climb high, sleep low' rule by hiking to a higher elevation during the day and returning to your lower-altitude teahouse to sleep.
- Schedule the Namche Bazaar Stop. Plan your first rest day on Day 3 or Day 4 of your trek. Do not skip this; your body needs time to adjust after the rapid ascent from Lukla.
- Execute the 'Climb High, Sleep Low' Hike. During your Namche rest day, hike up to the Everest View Hotel (3,880m). Spend an hour there to let your body feel the altitude, then walk back down to Namche to sleep.
- Schedule the Dingboche Stop. Plan your second rest day on Day 7 or Day 8. Dingboche is significantly higher, and this break is crucial for preventing HAPE and HACE (altitude sickness).
- Hike Nangkartshang Peak. On your Dingboche rest day, hike toward the ridge of Nangkartshang Peak (up to 4,800m-5,000m). Go slowly, stay for 30 minutes to view the peaks, then descend back to Dingboche for the night.
- Can I skip the acclimatization days if I feel fine?
- Absolutely not. Altitude sickness can strike anyone regardless of fitness level. These days are non-negotiable for safety.
- What is the most important thing to do during these days?
- Drink water consistently (3-4 liters per day) and move at a 'bistari, bistari' (slowly, slowly) pace during your practice hikes.
