A 3-Week Backpacking Route Through Southern Mexico
Focus on the Oaxaca-Chiapas-Yucatán corridor to maximize diverse experiences without overextending. Use a mix of ADO buses and colectivo vans to travel efficiently between colonial highlands, jungle ruins, and Caribbean coastlines.
- Start in Oaxaca City. Fly into OAX. Spend 4 days here for the food culture and day trips to Hierve el Agua. Use local colectivos to reach the site for 100 pesos.
- Move to the Chiapas Highlands. Take the overnight ADO bus from Oaxaca to San Cristóbal de las Casas (12-14 hours). Stay 4 days to explore the indigenous villages and Sumidero Canyon.
- Head to Palenque. Take a 5-hour shuttle or bus to Palenque. Spend 2 days exploring the ruins deep in the jungle. Stay in the El Panchan area for a more immersive forest experience.
- Cross into the Yucatán. Take an ADO bus to Mérida (8 hours). Use this as your hub for 4 days to visit Uxmal, Cenote Cuzamá, and eat your way through the local markets.
- Finish on the Caribbean Coast. Travel to Tulum or Bacalar for your final 4 days. Bacalar is quieter and better for swimming; Tulum offers more nightlife and access to beaches.
- Is it safe to travel by bus at night?
- Stick to ADO 'GL' or 'Platino' class buses for night travel. They are reliable, have bathrooms, and use toll roads, which are considered safer.
- Do I need to speak Spanish?
- You can survive in tourist hubs with English, but knowing basic phrases like '¿Cuánto cuesta?' (How much?) and 'La cuenta, por favor' (The bill, please) will make your life significantly easier.
