Planning a Madagascar National Parks Circuit
To see Madagascar's national parks, hire a 4x4 with a licensed local driver for the duration of your trip. Focus on the RN7 route from Antananarivo to Toliara to hit the best parks, including Ranomafana and Isalo, within 10 to 14 days.
- Hire a driver-guide. Do not rent a car yourself. Roads are unpaved, unmarked, and prone to bandits. A driver-guide handles navigation, park entry logistics, and local language barriers for about $60-$80 USD per day, excluding fuel.
- Map your route. The RN7 (Route Nationale 7) is the most reliable circuit. Start in Antananarivo, move south to Antsirabe, Ranomafana, Isalo, and end in Toliara. Plan for 4-6 hours of driving between major stops.
- Book mandatory park guides. You cannot enter most national parks without a local guide. These are hired at the park office upon arrival. Budget $15-$25 USD per group per day for these specific guides.
- Secure your park permits. Permits are purchased at park gates. Keep your receipt throughout the visit; rangers conduct random checks inside the parks.
- Can I use a credit card?
- Almost never. Carry enough Ariary cash to cover your entire circuit, plus a reserve of USD or Euros for emergencies or guide tips.
- Do I need travel insurance?
- Absolutely. Ensure your policy includes medical evacuation, as remote parks are hours away from proper hospitals.
