5 Days in Kyoto: The Practical Itinerary
Spend five days in Kyoto by grouping sites geographically to minimize transit time. Prioritize early morning starts to beat crowds at major shrines and use the local bus and subway system for efficient movement.
- Secure an IC card. Upon arrival, purchase a Suica, Pasmo, or Icoca card. You will use this for all buses and subways; it saves you from buying individual paper tickets for every trip.
- Group by district. Divide your days into sectors: Arashiyama (West), Higashiyama (East), Northern Kyoto, and Central Kyoto. Do not try to cross the city twice in one day.
- Start at 7:00 AM. Kyoto's top sites, like Fushimi Inari and Kiyomizu-dera, get shoulder-to-shoulder crowded by 10:00 AM. Arrive at your first destination of the day no later than 8:00 AM.
- Do I need to book temple tickets in advance?
- Most temples do not require advance bookings, but some special cultural experiences or popular villas do. Check the temple's official website one month prior.
- Is cash necessary?
- Yes. While larger restaurants accept cards, many small temples and neighborhood eateries are cash-only. Keep at least 10,000 yen on you.
