Planning a Safari in Kruger National Park

To plan a successful Kruger safari, book your accommodation within the park at least 6-9 months in advance to secure prime locations. You will need a rental vehicle or pre-booked guided game drives to navigate the park's road network effectively.

  1. Select your entry gate and camps. Kruger is massive. Choose camps based on your desired vibe: Lower Sabie for high leopard density and river views, or Satara for open plains and lions. Stay at least 2 nights in one spot to avoid spending your whole trip behind the wheel.
  2. Book accommodation through SANParks. Use the official SANParks website to book your bungalows or campsites. Private concessions within the park are significantly more expensive but offer off-road game viewing, which public roads do not allow.
  3. Arrange transport. If flying, fly into Skukuza (SZK) to be inside the park immediately, or Johannesburg (JNB) and rent a car for the 5-6 hour drive to the Malelane or Numbi gates. A standard sedan is fine for main tar roads, but an SUV makes spotting animals over tall grass easier.
  4. Purchase a Wild Card. If you plan on spending more than 4 days in the park, buy a Wild Card. It covers your daily conservation fees and pays for itself quickly compared to paying the daily entry fee.
Is it safe to drive myself in Kruger?
Yes, it is perfectly safe as long as you stay inside your vehicle at all times and adhere to the speed limits of 40-50 km/h.
Do I need anti-malarial medication?
Kruger is a high-risk malaria zone. Consult a travel clinic or your doctor at least 4 weeks before your trip to discuss prophylaxis options.
