7 Days in Jordan: A First-Timer's Itinerary

Focus your week on the Golden Triangle: Amman, Petra, and Wadi Rum. Rent a car to navigate the King’s Highway for the best views, and buy a Jordan Pass before you land to cover your visa fee and site entries.

  1. Buy the Jordan Pass online. Purchase the 'Jordan Explorer' pass online before you arrive. It costs 75 JOD, covers your tourist visa fee (40 JOD), and includes entry to Petra and over 40 other sites. Print a copy; you will need it for the airport.
  2. Rent a car. Public transport is unreliable for tourists. Renting a car at Amman airport gives you the freedom to stop at Mount Nebo and Kerak Castle along the King's Highway. An international driving permit is recommended but not always strictly enforced.
  3. Book your desert camp. For Wadi Rum, book a 'luxury' tent or a traditional Bedouin camp in advance. Most camps include dinner and a 4x4 desert tour. Do not just show up at the Visitor Center.
Is Jordan safe for first-time visitors?
Yes, Jordan is widely considered one of the safest countries in the Middle East, with a very welcoming culture toward tourists.
Do I need to tip?
Tipping is expected in restaurants (10%) and for tour guides/drivers. Keep small JOD notes handy.
