Planning a Japan Trip with Kids
Plan your route around the Shinkansen lines to minimize travel stress and book family-friendly 'Ryokan' that offer private onsen baths. Aim for one major activity per day, such as a park or interactive museum, to avoid overstimulating children while navigating busy transit systems.
- Select the right home base. Stick to two, maximum three, major cities. Moving hotels with children and luggage is exhausting. Base yourselves in Tokyo for the first 5 days and Kyoto for the next 4 to minimize packing and unpacking.
- Master the transit logistics. Purchase a Suica or Pasmo card for each family member immediately upon arrival. This avoids buying individual paper tickets for every subway ride. For long distances, book Shinkansen tickets in advance and ensure you select 'large baggage' seats if you have bulky strollers.
- Schedule for energy slumps. Japan involves significant walking, often 15,000+ steps a day. Always prioritize a hotel with a central location near a train station so you can retreat for afternoon naps or breaks.
- Book specific kid-friendly attractions. Pre-book tickets for high-demand spots like Ghibli Museum or TeamLab Borderless at least 4-6 weeks out. These sell out instantly and cannot be bought at the door.
- Are strollers practical in Japan?
- Only if they are compact. Large, multi-seat American-style strollers will be a nightmare on narrow sidewalks and in crowded trains. Use a lightweight umbrella stroller or a baby carrier.
- Can I find diapers and formula easily?
- Yes. Every 'konbini' (convenience store) carries diapers, and drugstores like Matsumoto Kiyoshi have high-quality Japanese brands that are often superior to western versions.
