Planning the Bavarian Castle Route from Munich

To see the major Bavarian castles like Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, base yourself in Munich and use a combination of regional trains and the 'Bavaria Ticket' (Bayern-Ticket). Dedicate at least two full days to ensure you have enough time for transit and the mandatory pre-booked guided tours.

  1. Buy the Bavaria Ticket. Purchase a Bayern-Ticket for your travel days. It covers unlimited travel on regional trains (RE, RB, S-Bahn) for one day starting at 9:00 AM on weekdays, or anytime on weekends. It costs 29 EUR for the first person, plus 10 EUR for each additional traveler.
  2. Book castle tours in advance. Do not show up at Neuschwanstein hoping for a ticket. Book your entry slot online via the official 'Hohenschwangau' website at least 3 weeks in advance. You must pick up your physical tickets at the ticket center at least 90 minutes before your tour time.
  3. Coordinate your connections. Use the DB Navigator app to track regional train arrivals in Füssen. From the Füssen train station, take Bus 73 or 78 directly to the Hohenschwangau castle drop-off point; your Bavaria Ticket covers this bus fare.
  4. Plan the ascent. Once at the base of Neuschwanstein, you can walk up the steep hill (30-40 minutes), take the shuttle bus (3 EUR), or take a horse-drawn carriage (9 EUR). The shuttle bus does not run in icy or snowy conditions.
Can I see both Neuschwanstein and Linderhof in one day?
It is technically possible if you hire a private car, but via public transport, it is rushed and not recommended. Stick to one per day.
Are the castles open every day?
Most are open daily except for specific holidays like Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. Check the official Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung website for closures.
