How to Plan the Classic Egypt Route: Cairo to Luxor to Aswan
Fly or take the sleeper train from Cairo to Luxor, then travel south to Aswan by cruise or train. Dedicate at least 10 days to cover the major historical sites properly without rushing.
- Start in Cairo for 3-4 days. Focus on the Giza Plateau, the Saqqara Necropolis, and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Use Uber for transport within Cairo as it is reliable and prevents haggling over taxi fares.
- Book transit to Luxor. Take an internal flight (EgyptAir or Air Cairo) for a 1-hour trip, or book the Watania Sleeper Train for the 10-hour overnight journey. The train is iconic but book at least 2 weeks in advance.
- Explore Luxor for 3 days. Split your time between the East Bank (Karnak and Luxor Temples) and the West Bank (Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple). Hire a private driver for the West Bank to move between tombs quickly.
- Travel from Luxor to Aswan. Choose between a 3-night Nile cruise or a 3-hour train ride. Cruises stop at Edfu and Kom Ombo temples, which are difficult to reach by road.
- Finish in Aswan for 2-3 days. Visit the Philae Temple, the Unfinished Obelisk, and take a day trip to Abu Simbel. Book the Abu Simbel excursion at least 48 hours ahead through your hotel.
- Is it safe to travel alone in Egypt?
- Yes, it is generally safe for independent travelers, but expect significant attention from vendors and guides. Be firm with 'no' and keep your itinerary organized.
- Do I need a private guide?
- You do not need a guide for every minute, but hiring a licensed Egyptologist for the Valley of the Kings and Karnak makes the sites much more meaningful.
