What's the best backpacking route through Colombia?
The classic Colombia backpacking route runs Bogotá → Medellín → Guatapé → Salento → San Agustín → Popayán → Cali → Cartagena → Santa Marta → Tayrona over 3-4 weeks. This covers colonial cities, coffee regions, archaeological sites, and Caribbean coast while following safe, well-traveled paths with good hostel infrastructure.
- Start in Bogotá (3-4 days). Fly into El Dorado International Airport. Spend your first days acclimatizing to altitude (8,660 feet) in La Candelaria historic district. Visit Gold Museum, take graffiti tours in La Macarena, day trip to Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral. Stay in La Candelaria or Zona Rosa for hostels.
- Fly to Medellín (4-5 days). Take 1-hour domestic flight (avoid overland due to safety). Base in El Poblado neighborhood. Ride the cable cars to Comuna 13, visit Pablo Escobar tour if interested, explore Guatapé as day trip. Medellín has the best hostel scene and nightlife.
- Bus to Coffee Triangle - Salento (3-4 days). Take 6-hour bus to Armenia, then 1-hour bus to Salento. Stay in this colorful coffee town, hike Valle de Cocora to see wax palms, do coffee farm tours at Finca Don Elias or similar. Book tours through your hostel.
- Travel to San Agustín (2-3 days). Take buses Armenia → Neiva → San Agustín (8-10 hours total). Visit Archaeological Park with pre-Columbian statues, horseback riding in countryside. Only stay if you're into archaeology - otherwise skip and add days elsewhere.
- Continue to Popayán (2 days). Take 3-hour bus from San Agustín. Walk the white colonial streets, visit local markets. This is a quick stop before Cali - mainly for breaking up travel time.
- Party in Cali (2-3 days). Take 3-hour bus from Popayán. Take salsa lessons, experience world-class nightlife in Zona Rosa. Cali is purely for dancing and partying - budget extra for nights out.
- Fly to Caribbean Coast - Cartagena (4-5 days). Take 1.5-hour flight (buses take 12+ hours). Explore Old City walls, visit Getsemaní for street art and nightlife, day trip to Rosario Islands. Stay in Getsemaní for backpacker scene.
- End in Santa Marta and Tayrona (4-5 days). Take 4-hour bus from Cartagena. Use Santa Marta as base for Tayrona National Park (camping or eco-habs), optional Ciudad Perdida 4-day trek if you have time. Fly home from Simón Bolívar International Airport.
- Is it safe to travel overland between cities?
- Stick to major routes between tourist destinations during daylight. Bogotá-Medellín by air only. Avoid remote areas and night buses. Most backpackers have no issues following this standard route.
- Do I need to speak Spanish?
- Much more important than in Mexico or Costa Rica. Download Google Translate, learn basic phrases. Hostel staff in major cities speak some English but expect Spanish everywhere else.
- Can I skip the internal flights?
- Fly Bogotá-Medellín and consider flying Cali-Cartagena. These routes save 10+ hours each and flights are cheap. Other connections are fine by bus.
- What if I have less time?
- Cut San Agustín and Popayán first. With 2 weeks do: Bogotá → Medellín → Salento → Cali → Cartagena → Tayrona. Skip interior archaeological sites for coast and coffee.
- Is Ciudad Perdida worth it?
- Only if you're a serious hiker and have extra time. 4-day trek costs $200-250 and requires good fitness. Amazing but not essential for first-time Colombia visit.
