How to Plan the Torres del Paine W or O Circuit

Plan 4-5 days for the W Trek or 7-9 days for the O Circuit. Book refugios 6 months ahead for peak season (Dec-Mar). The W covers the park's highlights while the O adds the remote backside with more challenging terrain.

  1. Choose your circuit. The W Trek (4-5 days) hits the main sights: Base Torres, Cuernos del Paine, and Grey Glacier. The O Circuit (7-9 days) adds the remote northern section with John Gardner Pass. First-timers usually pick the W.
  2. Book refugios immediately. Reserve beds 6 months before travel through Vertice Patagonia (for Las Torres, Cuernos, Central) and Fantastico Sur (for Chileno, Grey). Peak season (Dec-Mar) sells out fast. Camping is easier to book but still reserve spots.
  3. Plan your route direction. Most hike west to east (Las Torres to Grey) to end with the glacier views. For the O Circuit, go counterclockwise to tackle John Gardner Pass with fresh legs on day 2-3.
  4. Arrange transport to trailheads. Fly into Punta Arenas, bus to Puerto Natales (3 hours), then bus to park entrance (2 hours). Book return transport before starting your trek. Las Torres and Laguna Amarga are the main starting points.
  5. Pack for variable weather. Patagonian weather changes fast. Bring waterproof shell, warm layers, and sun protection. Refugios provide meals and bedding. If camping, pack a 4-season tent rated for wind.
  6. Get permits and pay fees. No advance permits needed. Pay park entrance fee ($21 USD) at entry. Present confirmation emails for refugio bookings. Rangers check these at checkpoints along the trail.
Can I do the trek without booking refugios?
Not during peak season (Dec-Mar). Refugios sell out and camping spots are limited. Book 6 months ahead or risk sleeping rough.
Is the O Circuit much harder than the W?
Yes. The O adds 3-4 days through remote terrain with river crossings, John Gardner Pass, and variable weather. It requires more experience and self-sufficiency.
What if weather cancels my trek?
Park closes trails for high winds or dangerous conditions. Build 1-2 buffer days into your schedule. Refugio bookings are usually non-refundable but some operators offer rebooking.
Can I resupply food along the way?
Limited options. Refugios sell basic snacks and instant meals at high prices. Stock up in Puerto Natales. Las Torres refugio has the best selection.
