How to Plan a 2-Month Central America Backpacking Route
Start in Guatemala or Belize and work your way south through Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Allow 8-12 days per country with Guatemala and Costa Rica getting the most time. Budget $40-60 per day and plan around dry season (November-April) for best weather.
- Choose your entry and exit points. Fly into Guatemala City or Belize City to start north-to-south. End in Panama City for cheap flights home or Costa Rica's San José if you want more flight options. Going south-to-north works too but most backpackers prefer the Guatemala-to-Panama flow.
- Block out your time by country. Guatemala: 12-14 days (Antigua, Lake Atitlán, Tikal, Semuc Champey). Belize: 6-8 days (Caye Caulker, San Ignacio). Honduras: 7-10 days (Copán, Roatán, maybe Utila). Nicaragua: 10-12 days (Granada, San Juan del Sur, Ometepe Island). Costa Rica: 14-16 days (Manuel Antonio, Monteverde, Arenal, Puerto Viejo). Panama: 8-10 days (Casco Viejo, Bocas del Toro, maybe San Blas).
- Map out your overland route. Use chicken buses between cities - they're $2-8 per ride but slow. Guatemala City to Antigua (1 hour), Antigua to Panajachel for Lake Atitlán (3 hours), then to Flores for Tikal (8 hours). Cross to Belize at Melchor de Mencos. Work south: Belize City to Caye Caulker (water taxi), then overland to Guatemala border, through Honduras (Copán ruins), into Nicaragua via Las Manos border.
- Book key accommodation in advance. Only pre-book your first 3-4 nights and any island stays (Roatán, Caye Caulker, Bocas del Toro fill up). Everywhere else, book 1-2 days ahead or walk in. Hostels run $8-15 per night in dorms, $20-35 for private rooms.
- Plan around weather patterns. Dry season (November-April) is best for travel. Rainy season (May-October) means afternoon downpours and muddy roads but fewer crowds and lower prices. If going during rainy season, pack a proper rain jacket and waterproof your electronics.
- Sort your visas before you go. Americans get 90 days in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador combined (CA-4 agreement). Belize gives 30 days. Costa Rica and Panama each give 90 days. You'll need to border hop or do visa runs if staying longer in the CA-4 zone.
- Is it safe to backpack Central America?
- Generally yes with common sense. Stick to main backpacker routes, don't flash valuables, avoid walking alone at night in cities. Guatemala City, San Pedro Sula (Honduras), and parts of San Salvador have higher crime rates - transit through quickly.
- How much Spanish do I need?
- Basic Spanish helps enormously outside tourist areas. Download Google Translate with offline Spanish, learn numbers 1-100, basic food words, and transportation phrases. Many backpackers pick up Spanish as they go.
- Can I do this trip on $30 per day?
- Possible but tight. You'd need to stay in the cheapest dorms, eat only local food, take slow buses, and skip expensive activities like diving. $40/day gives you more flexibility, $60/day is comfortable.
- Should I book tours or activities in advance?
- Only for diving certifications and San Blas island trips to Panama. Everything else you can book locally for better prices. Tour agencies line every backpacker street.
