Planning a One-Week Trip to Bolivia and the Uyuni Salt Flats
To see the Uyuni Salt Flats in one week, fly directly into La Paz, spend two days acclimating to the altitude, and book a three-day, two-night 4x4 tour from Uyuni. Avoid trying to see the Amazon or Sucre on this schedule, as the travel time will eat your entire trip.
- Acclimatize in La Paz. Spend your first 48 hours in La Paz (3,640m elevation) doing almost nothing strenuous. Drink coca tea and take it slow to avoid severe altitude sickness.
- Fly to Uyuni. Book a domestic flight from La Paz to Uyuni. Do not take the 10-hour bus; it is unreliable and exhausting for a one-week trip.
- Book your 4x4 tour in advance. Use a reputable agency (like Red Planet or Quechua Connection) to book your 3-day Salt Flats tour. Ensure the tour includes the national park entrance fees and private transport.
- Return and depart. Fly back from Uyuni to La Paz on the evening of your third tour day or the following morning to ensure you have a buffer for potential flight delays.
- Do I really need to fly to Uyuni?
- Yes. The bus from La Paz is long, bumpy, and often takes much longer than the scheduled 10 hours. In a 7-day trip, your time is better spent on the salt flats than on a bus.
- Is the altitude dangerous?
- It is real. Spend your first two days in La Paz doing nothing strenuous. If you have heart or lung conditions, consult a doctor before booking.
- Can I do the salt flats in one day?
- You can, but you will miss the incredible lagoons, geysers, and rock formations further south. If you have the time, the 3-day tour is significantly better.
