How to plan an Argentina itinerary with children
Plan 10-14 days focusing on Buenos Aires (3-4 days), Mendoza wine region (3 days), and Bariloche (4-5 days). Book direct flights between cities, choose family hotels with pools, and schedule activities for mornings when kids are fresh. Argentina is very child-friendly with late dinner culture that works well for families.
- Choose your base destinations. Pick 2-3 main cities maximum. Buenos Aires (kid-friendly neighborhoods like Palermo or Recoleta), Mendoza (family wineries and outdoor activities), and Bariloche (lakes and adventure) work best. Skip Patagonia with young kids - it's too remote and logistics are complex.
- Book internal flights early. Domestic flights in Argentina are expensive and fill up. Book Buenos Aires to Mendoza (1.5 hours) and Mendoza to Bariloche (1 hour) at least 2 months ahead. Aerolineas Argentinas and Flybondi have the most family-friendly policies.
- Schedule around Argentine meal times. Lunch is 1-3pm, dinner starts at 9pm. This actually works great with kids - they can nap during siesta (2-5pm) and eat dinner at their normal bedtime. Plan morning activities when kids are fresh, rest during afternoon heat.
- Book accommodations with pools. Kids need downtime. Choose hotels or Airbnbs with pools or play areas. In Buenos Aires: Four Points Palermo or apartment in Palermo Hollywood. Mendoza: Park Hyatt has a great pool. Bariloche: Lagos del Sur or lake-view apartment.
- Plan kid-friendly activities by city. Buenos Aires: zoo, planetarium, Japanese Garden, Tigre Delta boat trip. Mendoza: family wineries like Catena Zapata (has kids' area), Aconcagua National Park easy hikes. Bariloche: chairlift rides, lake beaches, chocolate shops, Circuito Chico drive.
- Prepare for currency situation. Bring US dollars cash. The official exchange rate is terrible - you'll get 2x more pesos using the 'blue dollar' rate at currency exchange houses (cuevas). Never exchange at airports. Your kids will be fascinated by the giant peso bills.
- Is Argentina safe for families with children?
- Very safe in tourist areas. Buenos Aires, Mendoza, and Bariloche are safer than most US cities. Argentines love children and families are welcome everywhere. Main concerns are pickpocketing in Buenos Aires (keep bags closed) and altitude in Mendoza (drink lots of water).
- How do meal times work with kids?
- Argentine dinner culture actually works well for families. Kids can have an early dinner at 6-7pm, then nap while adults have drinks and appetizers. Real dinner starts at 9pm when kids wake up refreshed. Most restaurants have high chairs and kids' menus.
- Should we rent a car or use taxis?
- Skip car rental in Buenos Aires - traffic is chaotic and parking impossible. Use Uber or taxis (always metered). In Mendoza and Bariloche, rental cars give you flexibility for wineries and scenic drives. Car seats are rarely available - bring your own or use taxi services that provide them.
- What if my kids don't like Argentine food?
- Kids love Argentine food. Empanadas are like hot pockets, asado (barbecue) is grilled meat, and milanesas are breaded cutlets. Every restaurant has pasta and pizza. Ice cream (helado) is incredible - even picky eaters will be happy.
