How to Pack as a Couple for Southeast Asia

Split shared items between both bags, pack one week's worth of lightweight clothes each, and coordinate gear like chargers and toiletries. Each person should carry essentials in their own bag in case one gets lost.

  1. Divide shared items strategically. Split chargers, toiletries, and medications between both bags. Pack your phone charger in one bag, their laptop charger in the other. This way you're never completely stuck if one bag goes missing.
  2. Pack one week of clothes each. Bring 7 days worth of lightweight, quick-dry clothing per person. You'll do laundry weekly anyway in Southeast Asia, and clothes are cheap to buy locally if needed.
  3. Coordinate bulky items. One person carries the first aid kit, the other carries the power bank. One brings the universal adapter, the other brings the travel towels. Avoid duplicating heavy items.
  4. Pack individual survival kits. Each person should have their own: passport, credit card, cash, phone charger, one day's medication, and one change of clothes in their carry-on. Never put all critical items in one bag.
  5. Use packing cubes as a system. Assign colors: one person uses blue cubes, the other uses red. This prevents mixing up belongings and makes repacking faster when you're sharing hotel rooms.
  6. Test your coordination at home. Practice packing together before leaving. Make sure both people know where shared items are located and can access what they need without unpacking the other person's entire bag.
Should we bring one large suitcase or two smaller ones?
Two smaller bags. You'll be more mobile, can split up at airports if needed, and won't lose everything if one bag gets delayed. Aim for one carry-on and one checked bag per person.
How do we handle different packing styles?
The organized person handles shared items and creates the packing list. The spontaneous person focuses on their personal items. Set a firm weight limit for each bag and stick to it.
What if one person overpacks?
Build in a 2-3 kg buffer in each bag before leaving. The underpacker can take some overflow from their partner. Alternatively, ship extra items home from your first stop.
Should we pack identical items for backup?
Only for true essentials: medications, glasses, and phone chargers. For everything else, coordinate to avoid duplicates. You can buy replacements easily throughout Southeast Asia.
