How to Pack Like a Pro Using Packing Cubes

Packing cubes allow you to compress soft items and categorize your gear, saving space and preventing your suitcase from becoming a jumbled mess. To use them effectively, roll your clothes instead of folding them and group items by outfit type or category.

  1. Categorize your gear. Sort your clothing into logical groups: bottoms, tops, undergarments, and socks. Keep one small cube dedicated exclusively to dirty laundry to keep it separate from clean items.
  2. Use the rolling method. Lay each item flat, fold in the sleeves, and roll it tightly into a sausage shape. This prevents wrinkles and allows you to fit more items into a single cube compared to flat folding.
  3. Fill the cubes. Place your rolled items into the cubes until they are full, but not bursting. If the zipper struggles to close, you have overpacked that specific cube.
  4. Optimize the suitcase layout. Place larger, heavier cubes at the bottom of your suitcase (closest to the wheels). Use smaller cubes or gaps around the edges for irregularly shaped items like chargers or shoes.
Should I roll or fold my clothes inside the cubes?
Always roll. Rolling creates a tighter density, reduces wrinkles, and allows you to see everything in the cube at a glance.
Are compression cubes worth the extra cost?
Yes, if you are traveling with bulky items like sweaters or winter jackets. For standard cotton t-shirts, basic non-compression cubes are sufficient.
How do I deal with dirty clothes?
Bring one cube specifically for laundry. If it gets smelly, ensure that cube is placed at the very top of your suitcase to keep odors away from clean garments.
