How to pack for the Inca Trail weight limits

You are limited to 7 kilograms of personal items for your porter to carry. Pack only the essentials, prioritize moisture-wicking synthetic fabrics, and use a lightweight duffel bag that meets your operator's specifications.

  1. Weigh your bag before you leave home. Use a digital luggage scale to weigh your packed duffel. Remember that your sleeping bag and mat usually count toward your 7kg limit if you are renting them from your trekking company.
  2. Strip down your toiletries. Do not bring full-sized bottles. Use 100ml silicone travel tubes for shampoo, soap, and sunscreen. Only bring what you need for 4 days—you won't be showering much on the trail.
  3. Layer, don't double up. Avoid heavy cotton jeans or thick sweaters. Bring one high-quality fleece, one lightweight down jacket, and base layers that you can swap out. Wear your heaviest items (hiking boots and waterproof jacket) on the flight to save weight.
  4. Use a pack liner. Instead of heavy dry bags, use a thick trash compactor bag to line your duffel. It weighs almost nothing and keeps all your clothes bone-dry during mountain downpours.
What happens if my bag is over 7kg?
The porter will likely ask you to remove items until it meets the limit. If you cannot, you may be asked to pay for a second porter, which is often difficult to arrange on the spot.
Should I pack a change of clothes for every day?
No. Bring one clean set for sleeping and trekking. You will be sweaty and dusty by noon, so stick to moisture-wicking layers that dry overnight.
