How to organize your electronics for a long-haul flight
Keep all your electronics and charging cables in a single dedicated tech pouch that sits in your personal item, never your checked luggage. Use a high-capacity power bank and a multi-port wall charger to minimize the number of bricks you carry.
- Consolidate your cables. Don't bring a mess of tangled cords. Use a cable organizer or a small Velcro tie for each wire. Carry one 6-foot cable for your phone and one 10-foot cable for your tablet or laptop so you can reach outlets from any seat position.
- Use a single multi-port charger. Replace individual charging bricks with a single GaN (Gallium Nitride) wall charger that has at least two USB-C ports and one USB-A port. This allows you to charge your phone, headphones, and laptop simultaneously from one outlet.
- Pack a power bank. Carry a 20,000mAh power bank. This is the maximum capacity allowed on most international airlines without special permission. Ensure it is accessible in your personal bag for quick access during the flight.
- Protect your devices. Use a padded tech sleeve for your laptop or tablet. If you are packing these in your carry-on, ensure they are placed toward the center of your bag, cushioned by soft clothing, to avoid impact damage when the bag is shoved into overhead bins.
- Organize for security screening. Pack your electronics in a way that allows you to easily pull them out at security. Place your tech pouch or laptop sleeve at the very top of your carry-on so you aren't digging through clothes at the TSA/security checkpoint.
- Can I keep my power bank in my checked luggage?
- No. Lithium-ion batteries are a fire hazard in the cargo hold. They must stay with you in the cabin.
- Does my charger need to be a specific wattage?
- For laptops, ensure your GaN charger is at least 60W. If it is lower, it will charge your phone fine but may not provide enough power to keep your laptop running while in use.
- Why a 10-foot cable?
- Airplane seat outlets are often located near the floor or under the seat in front of you. A 10-foot cable gives you the freedom to move your device comfortably while it's plugged in.
