Essential Gear for Backpacking Southeast Asia

Limit your pack to 40 liters to avoid checked bag fees and stay mobile on crowded local buses. Focus on modular, quick-dry clothing and a high-quality universal power adapter, as you will be doing laundry every 3-4 days.

  1. Choose the right pack. Select a 35L to 40L front-loading backpack. It must meet international carry-on dimensions (usually 22 x 14 x 9 inches) to avoid airline baggage fees and lost luggage.
  2. Use packing cubes. Group clothes by type (tops, bottoms, undergarments) into three separate cubes. This allows you to find items without dumping your entire bag on a hostel bed.
  3. Optimize for climate. Bring mostly synthetic or merino wool fabrics that dry in under 4 hours. Cotton is heavy and stays wet in high humidity; avoid it.
  4. Prepare your document stack. Keep a physical folder with 4 passport photos, a copy of your passport data page, and physical copies of your travel insurance policy. Digital is fine, but physical works when your phone dies.
Do I really need a money belt?
No. A money belt is uncomfortable and obvious. Keep your cash in a zippered pocket inside your backpack and carry a small amount of 'day cash' in your front pocket.
How do I do laundry?
Most hostels offer laundry services for $1-$2 per kilogram. Hand-washing items in the shower is also common; just pack a small travel-sized sink stopper.
