Packing for Adventure in Costa Rica

Focus on high-quality synthetic layers that dry quickly and footwear that handles both water and jungle trails. You need to pack for extreme humidity and frequent downpours rather than just hot weather.

  1. Choose the right base layers. Avoid cotton entirely. Bring at least 4 synthetic, moisture-wicking t-shirts and 2 pairs of lightweight trekking shorts. These will dry overnight in high humidity, whereas cotton will stay damp and heavy for days.
  2. Select versatile footwear. Pack one pair of dedicated trail runners with aggressive tread for hiking and one pair of 'water shoes' (like Keens or Chacos) with a toe box for rafting and canyoning. Do not bring brand new hiking boots; you will get blisters.
  3. Prepare for the rain. Even in the dry season, the rainforest lives up to its name. Bring a high-quality, lightweight breathable rain shell. Avoid heavy rubberized ponchos, as you will overheat instantly while hiking.
  4. Protect your electronics. Bring a 10-20 liter dry bag for your day pack. Costa Rica's rain is unpredictable, and standard 'water-resistant' bags will eventually fail during a boat trip or a torrential downpour.
Do I really need long pants?
Yes. Bring one pair of lightweight, quick-dry hiking pants to protect your legs from biting insects and vegetation during jungle treks.
Will my clothes dry if I wash them?
Not easily. The humidity is often above 80%. Stick to synthetic fabrics that can be rinsed and air-dried; avoid denim or thick cottons at all costs.
