What to pack for Tokyo by season
Tokyo's weather is extreme, ranging from humid, sweltering summers to dry, biting winters. To survive, pack layers for spring and autumn, lightweight breathable fabrics for summer, and a high-quality down jacket for winter.
- Spring (March–May). Pack a mix of light sweaters and a medium-weight trench coat. The weather fluctuates between 10°C and 20°C. Bring comfortable walking shoes, as you will likely be spending all day outside at parks or shrines.
- Summer (June–August). Bring thin, moisture-wicking clothing. Tokyo humidity is intense (often 80%+). Carry a folding fan and a small hand towel, as most public restrooms do not provide paper towels.
- Autumn (September–November). Start with light layers in September and move to heavier knits by November. A scarf and a light jacket are sufficient for most days. This season is often wet, so pack a compact, sturdy travel umbrella.
- Winter (December–February). Focus on thermal base layers like Uniqlo Heattech. You need a windproof outer coat, gloves, and a warm hat. Interiors are heavily heated, so wear layers you can easily shed when entering shops or trains.
- Is there a dress code for visiting shrines?
- Not strictly, but dressing modestly (shoulders and knees covered) is respectful and encouraged.
- Should I bring a heavy suitcase?
- No. Train stations often have many stairs and narrow corridors. Stick to a carry-on or medium-sized luggage that you can easily maneuver yourself.
