How to dress professionally in Bangkok's heat and humidity

Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics in dark colors, keep a blazer for air-conditioned meetings, and always carry sweat-wipes. Thai business dress is conservative but practical - long sleeves and pants are expected, but cotton-linen blends and moisture-wicking fabrics are your friends.

  1. Choose the right fabrics. Stick to lightweight cotton, linen-cotton blends, or moisture-wicking synthetic fabrics. Avoid pure polyester - it traps heat and looks cheap in Thai business culture. Bamboo fiber shirts are excellent for humidity.
  2. Plan for temperature swings. Bangkok offices blast AC to 18-20°C (64-68°F). Bring a lightweight blazer or cardigan for meetings, then shed it between buildings. Keep it in your bag, not draped over your arm.
  3. Pick conservative colors that hide sweat. Navy, charcoal, or black hide sweat stains better than light colors. Thai business culture favors dark, conservative colors anyway. Avoid light blue or gray - they show every drop.
  4. Invest in proper undergarments. Moisture-wicking undershirts and breathable underwear make the difference between comfort and misery. Uniqlo Airism or similar tech fabrics are worth every baht.
  5. Choose closed-toe shoes with breathable socks. Thai business requires closed shoes. Leather with perforations or canvas dress shoes work best. Bamboo or merino wool socks wick moisture better than cotton.
  6. Pack emergency freshening supplies. Carry travel-size deodorant, face wipes, and a small hand towel. 7-Eleven sells excellent cooling wipes. You'll need them between the BTS station and your meeting.
Can I wear short sleeves to Thai business meetings?
Not recommended. Thai business culture expects long sleeves for both men and women, even in extreme heat. Lightweight cotton long-sleeves are more professional than short sleeves with a blazer.
What about ties in Bangkok heat?
Ties are expected for formal meetings but not everyday office work. Choose lightweight silk or cotton ties. Remove immediately after meetings - no one expects you to wear it walking between buildings.
Are there different rules for women?
Women should cover shoulders and wear knee-length or longer skirts/pants. Sleeveless tops are acceptable under blazers but never alone. Thai business culture is more conservative than Western standards.
Should I buy clothes in Bangkok or bring them?
Bring tech fabrics from home - they're much cheaper. Buy basic cotton pieces in Bangkok for backup. Chatuchak Weekend Market has good deals on business basics, but quality varies.
