What to Wear on a Tanzania Safari

Pack neutral-colored clothing in natural fabrics, long pants and sleeves for morning/evening game drives, and layers for temperature changes. Avoid bright colors, black, and blue that attract tsetse flies. Sturdy closed-toe shoes and a wide-brimmed hat are essential.

  1. Choose neutral earth tones. Pack khaki, beige, olive green, and brown clothing. These colors blend with the environment and don't spook wildlife. Avoid white (shows dirt immediately), bright colors (visible to animals), black and navy blue (attract tsetse flies).
  2. Pack long sleeves and pants. Bring 3-4 long-sleeved shirts and 2-3 pairs of long pants for morning and evening game drives when temperatures drop and insects are active. Lightweight cotton or merino wool work best.
  3. Add layering pieces. Include a fleece jacket or warm layer for early morning drives (can be 50°F/10°C) and a light rain jacket for unexpected showers during wet season.
  4. Select proper footwear. Bring sturdy closed-toe shoes or hiking boots for walking safaris and camp activities. Pack comfortable sandals with back straps for evenings at camp. Avoid open-toed shoes in the bush.
  5. Don't forget sun protection. Pack a wide-brimmed hat that won't fly off in open safari vehicles, quality sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen. The equatorial sun is intense even through clouds.
Can I wear jeans on safari?
Jeans are too heavy, hot, and take forever to dry. Lightweight safari pants or convertible hiking pants are much better choices for the African climate.
Why can't I wear black or navy blue?
Tsetse flies are attracted to dark blue and black colors. While tsetse flies aren't present everywhere, it's safer to avoid these colors entirely during your safari.
How many outfits should I pack?
Pack 3-4 complete outfits maximum. Most safari camps offer daily laundry service, and luggage weight limits on small aircraft are strict (usually 15kg/33lbs in soft bags).
Do I need special boots for walking safaris?
Yes, closed-toe shoes are mandatory for any bush walking. Lightweight hiking boots or sturdy sneakers work fine. Avoid anything with mesh that lets in thorns and dirt.
What about evening wear at safari camps?
Most camps are casual even at dinner. Clean safari clothes are perfectly appropriate. Some luxury camps encourage smart casual for dinner, but nothing formal is needed.
