What to Wear in Southeast Asia
Pack lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temples, and prepare for both intense heat and air conditioning. Quick-dry synthetics work best for the constant humidity and sudden downpours.
- Choose breathable base layers. Cotton t-shirts, linen shirts, and moisture-wicking synthetics. Avoid polyester blends that trap heat. Pack 1-2 items per day since you'll sweat through everything.
- Pack modest temple-appropriate clothing. Long pants, maxi skirts, or capris that cover knees. Shirts that cover shoulders completely. Many temples rent sarongs, but having your own saves time and money.
- Bring rain protection that breathes. Lightweight rain jacket or poncho. Umbrellas work better than rain jackets in the humidity. Quick-dry pants are essential during monsoon season.
- Select footwear for wet conditions. Waterproof sandals for daily wear, closed-toe shoes that dry quickly for temple visits. Flip-flops work but consider strap sandals for walking on uneven surfaces.
- Pack layers for air conditioning. Light cardigan or thin long-sleeve shirt. Indoor spaces are often aggressively air-conditioned. Malls, restaurants, and buses can be freezing.
- Can I buy clothes there instead of packing?
- Yes, especially in Thailand and Vietnam. Tourist areas have plenty of Western-sized clothing. However, quality varies and you'll want proper clothes immediately upon arrival.
- How strict are temple dress codes?
- Very strict. Many temples won't let you enter with exposed shoulders, knees, or cleavage. Some provide covering, but not all. Always carry a sarong or light scarf.
- What about swimwear?
- Bikinis are fine at tourist beaches and pools. Consider a one-piece or rash guard for more conservative areas or island hopping with local boat crews.
- Do I need special shoes for temples?
- You'll remove shoes at temple entrances, so wear easy slip-on footwear. Avoid complicated laces or boots. Socks help if you're uncomfortable walking barefoot.
- How often will I need to do laundry?
- Every 2-3 days minimum. The humidity means clothes don't feel fresh even if they're not visibly dirty. Most accommodations offer laundry service or have machines.
