How to Pack Clothing for Patagonia Trekking
Pack in three layers: moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers (fleece or down), and waterproof/windproof shells. Bring 2-3 sets of everything since Patagonia's weather changes fast and laundry isn't available on multi-day treks. Skip cotton entirely.
- Start with merino wool or synthetic base layers. Pack 2-3 long-sleeve base layer tops and 2-3 pairs of base layer bottoms. Merino wool regulates temperature and resists odor even when worn multiple days. Synthetic alternatives dry faster if you're hiking in wet conditions.
- Add insulating mid-layers. Bring one fleece jacket and one down or synthetic insulated jacket. The fleece works when active and slightly damp. The insulated jacket is for camp and rest stops. Down is warmer but useless when wet—synthetic insulation still works when damp.
- Pack a waterproof shell system. Bring a hard-shell jacket and pants with full-zip legs. Look for Gore-Tex or similar breathable waterproof fabric. The jacket should fit over all your layers. Full-zip rain pants let you put them on without removing boots.
- Choose hiking pants and shorts carefully. Pack one pair of quick-dry hiking pants and one pair of hiking shorts or tights. Convertible zip-off pants work but the zippers can fail. Avoid jeans or cotton pants entirely—they stay wet and cold for hours.
- Pack extra socks and underwear. Bring 4-5 pairs of merino wool hiking socks and 4-5 pairs of moisture-wicking underwear. Your feet will get wet crossing streams and in rain. Having dry socks prevents blisters and keeps you warm at camp.
- Add warm accessories. Pack a warm beanie, sun hat with brim, waterproof gloves, and liner gloves. The liner gloves let you use your phone and manage gear. The waterproof outer gloves are essential for setting up camp in rain.
- Should I bring cotton clothes for around town?
- Bring one cotton t-shirt and normal underwear for travel days and town visits. But never wear cotton while trekking—it stays wet, loses insulation, and can cause hypothermia.
- How many changes of clothes do I need for a 10-day trek?
- Pack 2-3 sets of base layers, 2 pairs hiking pants, 4-5 pairs socks, and 4-5 pairs underwear. You'll hand-wash base layers every few days, but outer layers stay on for multiple days.
- Can I dry clothes while trekking?
- Barely. Patagonia is windy and often humid. Hang wet clothes on your pack while hiking to air-dry, but don't count on things drying overnight. Pack enough to stay comfortable even if everything stays damp.
- Do I need different clothes for Torres del Paine vs Fitz Roy?
- Same clothing system works for both. Torres del Paine circuits are longer (4-8 days) so you might want an extra set of base layers. Fitz Roy area has more glacial approaches, so prioritize waterproof layers.
