How to pack for unpredictable Nordic weather
Pack in layers with merino wool base layers, waterproof outer shell, and insulated mid-layer. Bring waterproof shoes and accessories for all conditions. Nordic weather changes fast, so versatility beats specialization.
- Start with merino wool base layers. Pack 2-3 merino wool long-sleeve shirts and 2 pairs of merino leggings. They regulate temperature, don't smell, and dry quickly. Avoid cotton completely—it kills you when wet and cold.
- Add an insulated mid-layer. Bring a down jacket or synthetic insulated jacket you can stuff into a small bag. Patagonia Nano Puff or similar. This is your warmth layer when temperatures drop unexpectedly.
- Get a proper waterproof shell. Buy a Gore-Tex or similar waterproof/breathable jacket and pants. Not water-resistant—waterproof. Nordic rain is relentless and will soak through anything else in 20 minutes.
- Pack waterproof footwear. Bring waterproof hiking boots or trail shoes with good grip. Pack waterproof socks (like Dexshell) as backup. Your feet will get wet—make sure they stay warm when they do.
- Include temperature accessories. Pack warm hat, sun hat, waterproof gloves, liner gloves, buff/neck gaiter, and sunglasses. You'll use all of them, sometimes in the same day.
- Test your layering system. Try on all layers together before you go. You should be able to add or remove pieces easily. If you can't move comfortably in all layers, something doesn't fit right.
- Can I buy gear there instead of packing it?
- Yes, but it's expensive. A basic rain jacket in Stockholm costs $150-200. Outdoor stores like Naturkompaniet have everything, but budget 50-100% more than US prices.
- How do I know if my gear is actually waterproof?
- Check the care labels for waterproof rating—20,000mm+ is good for Nordic conditions. If it says 'water-resistant' or 'DWR coating,' it's not enough for serious Nordic weather.
- What if I'm only visiting cities?
- You still need waterproof gear. Nordic cities get soaked by rain and you'll walk everywhere. The layering system works the same—you just might skip the heaviest insulation layer.
- Should I pack different gear for summer vs winter?
- Summer still needs waterproof shell and layers—it can be 5°C and raining in July. Winter adds serious insulation, winter boots, and heavyweight gloves. The base system stays the same.
- How much should this gear weigh?
- A complete Nordic weather system weighs 4-6 pounds. That's base layer, insulation, shell, waterproof boots, and accessories. Any heavier and your gear choices are too bulky.
