How to Pack as a Couple for Japan
Pack one shared suitcase with essentials and each carry a personal backpack. Bring layers for temperature changes, comfortable walking shoes, and leave 30% of suitcase space empty for purchases. Japan's laundry facilities are excellent, so pack light.
- Choose the right luggage setup. One medium suitcase (24-26 inches) shared between you, plus each person carries a daypack. This gives you flexibility while keeping luggage manageable on trains. Avoid hard cases if you plan to buy fragile items.
- Divide packing responsibilities. One person packs shared items (toiletries, chargers, first aid, laundry detergent pods). The other packs clothing coordination. Each person packs their own 3-day emergency supply in their carry-on.
- Plan your clothing strategy. Coordinate colors so you can mix and match each other's pieces. Pack 5-7 days worth of clothes maximum. Choose wrinkle-resistant fabrics. Bring one nice outfit each for temple visits or upscale dining.
- Pack for Japan-specific needs. Comfortable walking shoes that slip off easily (temple visits, traditional restaurants). Layers for air conditioning and outdoor heat. Small towel (many accommodations don't provide them). Portable phone charger for long sightseeing days.
- Leave room for purchases. Pack your suitcase only 70% full on departure. Japan has incredible shopping and you'll want space for electronics, snacks, and souvenirs. Consider bringing a foldable duffel bag as your second checked bag for the return trip.
- Should we bring our own towels?
- Yes, pack one small quick-dry towel. Many ryokan, capsule hotels, and budget accommodations don't provide towels. Hotels usually do, but the towel takes almost no space and saves money.
- How much should we budget for laundry?
- Coin laundry costs 300-500 yen per wash and dry cycle. Most accommodations have machines or there are coin laundries everywhere. Do laundry every 4-5 days to keep luggage light.
- What if we buy too much stuff to fit in our luggage?
- Ship items home via Japan Post from any convenience store or post office. A 5kg box to the US costs about 3,000 yen and arrives in 6-10 days. Much cheaper than excess baggage fees.
- Do we need formal clothes for temples?
- No formal dress code, but cover shoulders and knees out of respect. Your nice dinner outfit works fine. Some temples provide coverings if needed. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than formal clothes.
