How to Pack as a Couple for India

Pack light, breathable fabrics and coordinate shared items like electronics and toiletries to save space. Bring modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and divide essentials between both bags in case one gets lost.

  1. Divide shared items strategically. One person carries the camera gear and power bank, the other takes the first aid kit and toiletries. Split phone chargers between both bags. This prevents disaster if one bag goes missing.
  2. Pack modest clothing for both. Bring pants/long skirts that cover knees and shirts that cover shoulders. Pack 2-3 outfits for temples where strict dress codes apply. Cotton and linen work best in the heat.
  3. Coordinate laundry schedules. Pack 5-7 days of clothes maximum. Plan to wash every 3-4 days. Laundry services cost 20-50 rupees per item and take 24 hours. Pack one backup outfit each while waiting for laundry.
  4. Share one large backpack or two medium ones. Two 45L packs work better than one 80L pack for couples. Easier to manage on trains and buses. Each person can carry their own essentials if you get separated in crowds.
  5. Pack dual-purpose items. Sarongs work as blankets, towels, and modest temple cover-ups. Scarves provide sun protection and temple entry requirements. One person carries the medical kit, the other carries the tech kit.
Should we pack separate or shared toiletries?
Share shampoo, toothpaste, and sunscreen to save space. Pack separate medications and personal items. Bring travel-size everything since you can buy toiletries cheaply in India.
How do we handle different clothing sizes?
Pack your own clothes but share accessories like scarves and sarongs. If one person is much larger, they might need to carry slightly more weight. Balance this with the smaller person carrying shared electronics.
What if we have different temperature preferences?
Pack layers for both people. One might prefer shorts while the other wants long pants. Bring a light jacket each for air-conditioned trains and mountain areas. Don't try to coordinate everything.
Should we pack backup clothes for each other?
Not worth the space. Focus on quick-dry fabrics that wash and dry overnight. If one person's bag gets delayed, you can buy basics for $5-10 in any Indian city.
