How to pack a suit

Pack a suit by folding the jacket inside-out with tissue paper, rolling the pants, and placing both in a garment bag or flat in your suitcase. Bring a small steamer or hang immediately upon arrival to minimize wrinkles.

  1. Prepare your suit. Clean and press your suit before packing. Empty all pockets completely. Button the jacket and zip the pants.
  2. Pack the jacket. Turn the jacket inside-out. Place tissue paper or a dry cleaning bag between the shoulders. Fold one shoulder into the chest, then fold the other shoulder over it. Lay flat or place in a garment bag.
  3. Pack the pants. Fold pants in half lengthwise along the crease. Roll from the waist down, or fold in thirds if space is tight. Place rolled pants on top of the folded jacket.
  4. Add protection. Wrap the entire suit in a large dry cleaning bag or garment bag. This prevents other items from creating pressure points and wrinkles.
  5. Position in luggage. Place the wrapped suit on top of other items in your suitcase, never underneath heavy items. Fill empty spaces with soft items like underwear or socks.
  6. Unpack immediately. Hang the suit as soon as you arrive. If wrinkled, hang in a steamy bathroom for 10-15 minutes or use a portable steamer.
Should I carry on or check a suit?
Carry on when possible. Use a garment bag that fits airline requirements or pack in carry-on using the inside-out fold method. Checked bags increase wrinkle risk.
Can I pack multiple suits together?
Yes. Layer them with tissue paper between each suit. Pack heaviest/thickest suit on bottom, lightest on top. Use the same inside-out folding method for each.
What if my suit gets wrinkled anyway?
Hang immediately and use bathroom steam method - run hot shower, close door, hang suit for 15 minutes. For stubborn wrinkles, hotel concierge can recommend local pressing services.
Do expensive suits travel better?
Higher-quality fabrics like wool recover from wrinkles better than cheap polyester blends. But packing method matters more than price - a well-packed budget suit beats a poorly packed luxury suit.
Should I bring a backup shirt and tie?
Always pack one extra dress shirt and tie in case of spills or damage. Roll shirts and pack ties flat in a tie case or wrapped around the suit jacket.
