How to Pack Shoes Efficiently

To save space, pack your heaviest shoes at the bottom of your suitcase against the wheels and stuff the hollow interiors with socks, underwear, or charging cables. Use individual shoe bags or shower caps to keep your clothes clean and allow the shoes to maintain their shape.

  1. Select your footwear. Limit yourself to three pairs: one pair of sneakers you wear on the plane, one pair of versatile walking shoes, and one pair of lightweight sandals or dress shoes.
  2. Prepare the shoes. Clean the soles thoroughly to prevent tracking dirt into your bag. Use a stiff brush or a damp cloth to remove dried mud.
  3. Maximize interior volume. Stuff the inside of your shoes with small items like socks, underwear, rolled-up belts, or charging cables. This utilizes the 'dead space' inside the shoe and helps the shoe keep its shape.
  4. Wrap and seal. Place each shoe into an individual reusable shoe bag or a disposable shower cap. This keeps the dirty soles away from your clean clothes.
  5. Tetris your bag. Place your heaviest, bulkiest shoes at the bottom of the suitcase near the wheels. If using a rolling bag, this keeps the center of gravity low and prevents the bag from tipping over.
Should I wear my heaviest shoes on the plane?
Yes. Wearing your heaviest boots or sneakers saves precious weight and space in your luggage, which is helpful if you are traveling with a carry-on only.
Is it okay to pack shoes against clean clothes?
Only if you have properly cleaned the soles and covered them. Using a shower cap or a dedicated shoe bag is the best way to prevent dirt or debris from contaminating your wardrobe.
