How to Use Octopus Card with Your Family in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's Octopus Card works for families through individual cards linked to one account via the app, with discounted Child cards (ages 3-11) at half fare and Elder cards (65+) at concessionary rates. Each family member needs their own physical card, but you can manage and reload them all from one smartphone using the Octopus app.

  1. Get the right card for each family member. Adults need standard On-Loan Octopus Cards (HKD 50 refundable deposit). Children ages 3-11 qualify for Personalized Child Octopus Cards with half-price fares on transit and at most attractions. Apply for Child cards at MTR Customer Service Centres with proof of age (passport works). Elder cards (65+) also get discounts. Children under 3 travel free without a card.
  2. Download the Octopus app for family management. Install the Octopus app (iOS/Android) and register all family cards under one account. This lets one parent reload everyone's cards from their phone using credit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. You can check each family member's balance and transaction history without having to physically tap each card at a reader.
  3. Reload strategically for your trip length. For a family of four spending 5-7 days in Hong Kong, load HKD 300-400 per adult card and HKD 150-200 per child card initially. You will use it for MTR, buses, trams, Star Ferry, 7-Eleven, grocery stores, and most restaurants. Reload via the app when any card drops below HKD 50. Minimum app reload is HKD 50, maximum balance is HKD 3,000 per card.
  4. Tap individually at every checkpoint. Each person must tap their own card at MTR gates, bus readers, and ferry terminals. Do not share one card. Turnstiles close immediately after one person passes through. For buses and trams, board at the front and each family member taps the reader once. The reader shows the fare deducted and remaining balance for 2 seconds.
  5. Save the cards between trips. Octopus Cards do not expire. If you return to Hong Kong regularly, keep the cards for next time. They remain valid for years as long as you use them at least once every 1,000 days. Before leaving Hong Kong, you can get refunds at MTR Customer Service Centres for adult cards (HKD 50 deposit minus HKD 11 service fee if used less than 3 months, plus remaining balance). Child and Elder personalized cards cannot be refunded but can be kept for future trips.
Can I put my whole family on one Octopus Card?
No. Each person needs their own physical card to tap through MTR gates and onto buses. You cannot share one card for multiple people at transit checkpoints. You can manage all cards from one app account.
How do I prove my child's age for a Child Octopus Card?
Bring your child's passport to any MTR Customer Service Centre. They check the birthdate and issue the Child card on the spot. The child does not need to be present if you have the passport. Child cards have the child's photo and birthdate printed on them.
What happens if my kid loses their Octopus Card?
Personalized Child cards can be reported lost in the Octopus app or at MTR customer service. The balance transfers to a replacement card for HKD 20-30 replacement fee. Standard adult On-Loan cards cannot be replaced — you lose the balance and need to buy a new card.
Do we need Octopus Cards for a one-day Hong Kong stopover?
Yes. Even for one day you will use MTR 4-6 times and probably buy drinks or snacks. Buying single-journey MTR tickets wastes time and costs more. Get standard adult cards at the airport, load HKD 100-150 each, and return them when you leave.
Can tourists get the same discounts as Child and Elder cards?
Yes. Tourist children and elderly visitors qualify for the same personalized discount cards as residents. You just need proof of age. The cards work identically for visitors and locals.
