How to Use Octopus Card for Families in Hong Kong

Octopus Cards work for families by getting one card per person, including kids aged 3-11 who qualify for Child Cards with automatic half-price fares. Load cards at MTR stations or convenience stores, tap together at turnstiles, and reload as needed — family members can't share cards, and adults can't use Child Cards without a fine.

  1. Get the right card for each family member. Buy one Octopus Card per person at any MTR station customer service center. Kids aged 3-11 need a Child Octopus Card (bring passport for age verification). Kids under 3 ride free and don't need a card. Teens 12+ and adults use the standard Adult Card. The On-Loan Card costs HK$150 (HK$50 refundable deposit + HK$100 stored value) for adults and HK$70 (HK$50 deposit + HK$20 value) for children.
  2. Load enough value for your trip. Load HK$200-300 per adult and HK$100-150 per child for a week-long visit. You can add value at MTR Add Value Machines (cash or credit card), 7-Eleven, Circle K, or any MTR station counter. Machines accept HK$50, HK$100, HK$500, and HK$1000 notes. The card shows remaining balance on the reader screen every time you tap.
  3. Tap in and out together. Each person taps their own card at MTR turnstiles, bus readers, and ferry gates. Parents cannot tap once for multiple kids — every card must be tapped individually or you'll be charged an exit penalty. At MTR stations, tap on entry and exit. On buses and trams, tap once when boarding. The card works even when your balance is slightly negative (up to HK$35).
  4. Use cards beyond transport. Pay with Octopus at 7-Eleven, Circle K, McDonald's, Starbucks, Park N Shop, Wellcome supermarkets, and most fast food chains. Kids can use their Child Cards for purchases (no fare discount, just convenience). Useful for quick snacks, drinks, and grocery runs without handling cash. Tap the card on the reader and the amount deducts automatically.
  5. Get your deposit back before leaving. Return cards at any MTR customer service center within 90 days of purchase to get your HK$50 deposit back plus any remaining balance. If you return after 90 days or before 3 months of first use, they deduct a HK$9 service fee. Keep cards for your next trip — they don't expire and you can reload remotely through the Octopus app if you're returning.
Can my teenager use my Octopus Card?
No. Transit inspectors check cards randomly, and using an adult card when you qualify for child rates (or vice versa) results in a HK$290 fine plus the fare difference. Each person needs their own card matched to their age category.
What happens if my kid's card runs out of money on the MTR?
The turnstile lets you exit even with a negative balance up to HK$35. You must reload before using the card again or the next turnstile will reject it. Reload at any 7-Eleven, which is easier with kids than finding an MTR machine.
Do I need an Octopus Card for Disneyland and Ocean Park?
Useful but not required. The MTR Disneyland Resort Line accepts Octopus (HK$30-40 from central Hong Kong, half price for kids). Inside the parks, some food stalls accept Octopus but you can't use it for admission tickets — buy those separately online or at the gate.
Can I link our family's cards to one account?
Not with standard On-Loan Cards. You'd need to register each card separately in the Octopus app, which allows online reload but doesn't create a family account. Most families just reload cards individually at convenience stores — it's faster than app management.
Is the Airport Express cheaper with Octopus?
No discount, but it's more convenient than buying tickets. Adult fare from Airport to Hong Kong Station: HK$115. Child (3-11): HK$57.5. Same price whether you use Octopus or buy a ticket, but Octopus is faster and your card is ready to use immediately when you land.
