How to do visa runs from Bangkok to Cambodia

Take a bus or fly from Bangkok to the Poipet border crossing, exit Thailand, enter Cambodia with a visa on arrival, then immediately re-enter Thailand for a new 30-day stamp. The entire process takes 6-12 hours by bus or 4-6 hours by flight plus border time.

  1. Choose your route. Bus via Poipet is cheapest at $15-25 round trip but takes 6-12 hours total. Flying to Siem Reap costs $80-150 round trip but only takes 4-6 hours including border crossing time. Avoid tour company visa runs - they're overpriced at $50-80.
  2. Prepare required documents. Bring your passport with at least 6 months validity, a passport photo for Cambodia visa, and $30 USD cash for Cambodia visa on arrival. Have proof of onward travel from Thailand if asked (rare but possible).
  3. Get to the border. For bus: Take Northern Bus Terminal to Aranyaprathet (150 baht, 4 hours), then songthaew to border (10 baht). For flight: Fly Bangkok to Siem Reap, then taxi to Poipet border (1 hour, $15).
  4. Exit Thailand. Present your passport at Thai immigration. Get your exit stamp. Keep your departure card if you have one - you'll need it when re-entering.
  5. Enter Cambodia. Walk 500 meters to Cambodia immigration. Fill out arrival form, pay $30 for tourist visa (30 days), get your passport stamped. You're now legally in Cambodia.
  6. Immediately return to Thailand. Walk back to Thai immigration (same building complex). Present passport and get a new 30-day tourist exemption stamp. You're done - head back to Bangkok.
How many times can I do visa runs?
No official limit, but Thai immigration may question frequent runs. After 2-3 runs in 6 months, consider getting a proper tourist visa from a Thai consulate.
Can I stay overnight in Cambodia?
Yes, but it's not necessary for a visa run. If you do, stay in Poipet or take a taxi to Siem Reap (1 hour, $15). Just make sure to return and re-enter Thailand when ready.
What if Cambodia visa on arrival is rejected?
Very rare for tourists. Have $30 USD exact change, a passport photo, and 6+ months passport validity. If rejected, you can return to Thailand with your original stamp still valid.
Are visa run tours worth it?
No. Tours charge $50-80 for transport you can do yourself for $15-25. The only benefit is convenience, but you'll spend the same amount of time either way.
