Navigating Stone Town Like a Local
Ditch the map and navigate by using distinct landmarks like the Big Tree or the Old Fort as your anchor points. Walk the narrow alleys during early morning or late afternoon to avoid the mid-day heat and the heaviest congestion of vendors.
- Master the Grid (or lack thereof). Stone Town’s alleys are designed to disorient. Don't fight it. Use the tall, carved wooden doors as reference points rather than street names, which are inconsistently marked.
- Adopt the 'Right-Hand Rule'. When you inevitably get lost, turn right consistently for three blocks; this usually leads you toward the oceanfront (Forodhani Gardens) or a main thoroughfare.
- Follow the shadows. If you are walking at noon, stick to the alleys that run East-West to keep the sun off your back. The North-South alleys are often narrower and hotter.
- Use local transport wisely. For longer distances within the town, use 'dala-dalas' (shared minibuses) for 500 TZS, but only use official yellow-plated taxis for late-night transit to avoid overpaying.
- Is it safe to walk alone at night?
- Stone Town is generally safe, but stick to the well-lit main paths near the waterfront at night rather than the deepest, unlit interior alleys.
- Should I hire a guide?
- For your first day, yes. A local guide helps you understand the history behind the doors and saves you two hours of getting lost.
