Seoul Subway Navigation Guide

Buy a T-money card at any convenience store or subway station kiosk immediately upon arrival. Use the 'Subway Korea' or 'Naver Map' app to track your route in real-time, as Google Maps does not provide accurate walking or transit directions in Seoul.

  1. Get a T-money card. Purchase a physical T-money card at a convenience store (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven) or the station vending machine. Load it with 20,000 KRW to start; you can top up later at any station machine.
  2. Download the right apps. Download 'Naver Map' or 'Subway Korea'. These apps show real-time train arrivals, exit numbers, and transfer paths. Avoid Google Maps for transit.
  3. Locate the correct platform. Look at the overhead signs. They display the terminal station name of the train line. Ensure you are heading toward the correct end-of-line station to avoid going the wrong direction.
  4. Tap in and out. Tap your card on the sensor at the turnstile when entering and exiting. You must tap out to pay the correct fare and enable free transfers between lines.
  5. Navigate transfers. Follow the colored floor lines that match your transfer line. If your transfer is a long walk, look for moving walkways or follow the signs overhead.
Can I use my credit card for the subway?
Not directly at the turnstiles. You must use a T-money card, a WOWPASS, or a local Korean transit-enabled credit card.
How late do the trains run?
Most lines operate from 5:30 AM until midnight. On weekends, some lines extend until 1:00 AM, but always check your app for the last train time.
What if I get on the wrong side of the tracks?
Don't exit the station. Look for a gate inside the platform area that allows you to cross to the opposite platform without paying again. If you can't find one, ask the station attendant for help.
