How to Get Internet and WiFi in South Korea
South Korea has excellent internet infrastructure. Get unlimited data with a prepaid SIM card from KT, SK Telecom, or LG U+ at the airport for 30,000-50,000 won, or rent a portable WiFi device for 6,000-8,000 won per day. Free WiFi is available throughout Seoul and major cities.
- Get a SIM card at the airport. Head to the telecom counters in the arrivals hall at Incheon or Gimpo airports. KT, SK Telecom, and LG U+ all offer tourist SIM cards. Choose unlimited data plans (30,000-50,000 won for 5-30 days). Bring your passport and make sure your phone is unlocked.
- Rent a portable WiFi device. Book online before arrival or rent at airport counters. Devices cost 6,000-8,000 won per day and support 5-10 connected devices. Pick up at the airport and return before departure. Popular companies include KT Olleh WiFi and SK Telecom WiFi.
- Use free public WiFi. Connect to Seoul WiFi in Seoul, Busan WiFi in Busan, or KT WiFi throughout the country. Download the WiFi Korea app for easy access to hotspots. Most cafes, restaurants, hotels, and subway stations offer free WiFi. Look for signs with WiFi symbols.
- Buy data at convenience stores. If you already have a Korean SIM, buy data vouchers at 7-Eleven, GS25, or CU convenience stores. Data packages start at 5,000 won for 1GB. Follow the Korean instructions or ask staff for help.
- Which carrier has the best coverage?
- All three major carriers (KT, SK Telecom, LG U+) have excellent nationwide coverage. SK Telecom has slightly better rural coverage, but the difference is minimal for most tourist areas.
- Can I use my home country SIM card?
- Yes, but roaming charges are expensive (often $10-15 per day). Korean SIM cards or WiFi rental are much cheaper for stays longer than 2-3 days.
- Do I need to speak Korean to get internet?
- No. Airport staff speak English, and most telecom counters have English-speaking employees. Tourist SIM card setup is straightforward.
- How fast is Korean internet?
- Very fast. Average 4G speeds are 50-100 Mbps, and 5G reaches 200+ Mbps in major cities. South Korea has some of the world's fastest mobile internet.
