Navigating Singapore's public transport with children
Use a contactless credit card or a SimplyGo-enabled mobile wallet for seamless travel on both MRT and buses. Download the 'Citymapper' or 'MyTransport.sg' app to track real-time arrivals and avoid waiting at stops with tired kids.
- Set up your payment method. Do not buy physical EZ-Link cards for short trips. Simply tap your contactless Visa/Mastercard or use Apple Pay/Google Pay at the gantries. Children under 0.9m ride free; children taller than that but under 7 years old need a 'Child Concession Card' from an MRT ticket office to avoid adult fares.
- Master the MRT stroller strategy. Look for the 'Wheelchair Accessible' or lift icons at MRT stations. Always use the lift, never the escalator, with a stroller. During peak hours (7:30 AM–9:30 AM and 5:30 PM–7:30 PM), avoid the MRT if possible, as it gets incredibly crowded.
- Boarding buses with strollers. Wait for the bus at the designated stop and hail it. When boarding, fold your stroller if it is a large pram. If you have a compact travel stroller, most drivers will allow you to board without folding if there is space in the designated wheelchair/stroller bay. Always tap your card on the reader by the door when boarding and again when alighting.
- Manage MRT navigation. Check the overhead screens for the next station. If you need to change lines, follow the color-coded floor markings. Keep children away from the yellow tactile paving near the platform edge until the train has come to a full stop.
- Can I eat or drink on the MRT?
- No. Eating and drinking (including water) are strictly prohibited on trains and in station paid areas. You will be fined if caught.
- Are taxis or Grab cars better?
- Grab is great for door-to-door convenience, but it is 5-10 times more expensive than the MRT. Use Grab when the children are exhausted or during rain, but stick to the MRT for daily travel.
- What if I forget to tap out on a bus?
- You will be charged the maximum possible fare for that route. Always remember to tap out at the reader near the rear exit.
