Tracking Mountain Gorillas in Volcanoes National Park

To track mountain gorillas in Rwanda, you must purchase a permit for $1,500 USD at least six months in advance. You will then meet at the Kinigi Park Headquarters at 7:00 AM on your trek day to be assigned to a specific gorilla family.

  1. Secure your permit. Permits are limited to 96 per day. Book through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) website or an authorized tour operator at least 6 months before your travel date. Payment is required in full at the time of booking.
  2. Arrange your transport to Kinigi. The trek starts at the Kinigi Park Headquarters. Arrange a 4x4 vehicle rental or a private driver from Kigali, which is a 2.5 to 3-hour drive. Do not attempt to rely on public buses for this early morning start.
  3. Check in at headquarters. Arrive at 7:00 AM. You will be assigned a group based on your fitness level. If you prefer a shorter or longer hike, tell the rangers here before the groups are finalized.
  4. Follow your guide's instructions. A lead guide and two trackers will accompany your group of eight. Follow their pace, keep your distance from the gorillas, and never look the silverback directly in the eye.
Is there an age limit for tracking gorillas?
Yes, you must be 15 years or older to participate in gorilla trekking.
Can I use a flash on my camera?
No. Flash photography is strictly prohibited as it can agitate the gorillas.
How long does the hike take?
It varies from 30 minutes to 4 hours of hiking one way, depending on the location of the family.
