Getting from Rome airports to the city center
Take the Leonardo Express train from Fiumicino (FCO) to reach Termini station in 32 minutes for €14, or the Terravision bus from Ciampino (CIA) for €6. Avoid taxis unless you are in a group of three or more, as the city-mandated flat rates are expensive and traffic is unpredictable.
- Assess your arrival airport. Confirm if you are arriving at Fiumicino (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA). FCO is the main international hub; CIA is mostly for budget airlines.
- Use the train from Fiumicino (FCO). Follow signs for 'Train' inside the terminal. Buy a ticket for the Leonardo Express (€14) at the automated machines or Trenitalia app. It runs every 15-30 minutes directly to Roma Termini. Validate your paper ticket in the green machines before boarding if not using a mobile QR code.
- Use the bus from Ciampino (CIA). Trains don't serve the airport directly. Walk to the bus parking area outside the arrivals hall. Companies like Terravision or Sit Bus Shuttle offer transfers to Termini for €6. Book online to guarantee a seat, but print your ticket or have it ready on your phone.
- Navigate the city center. Once at Termini, transfer to Metro lines A or B, or use the bus hub in front of the station to reach your accommodation. Keep your luggage close, as pickpockets target tourists in crowded transit hubs.
- Are taxis worth it?
- Only if you are three or four people. Taxis from FCO to the city center have a fixed rate of €50, but traffic can turn a 40-minute drive into 90 minutes.
- Do I need to validate my ticket?
- Yes, if you buy a paper ticket for the regional FL1 train. You must stamp it in the green/yellow machines before boarding to avoid a fine. Mobile tickets and Leonardo Express tickets usually do not need validation.
